When restaining furniture is it better to use a plain stain or one that is a combination stain and finishing?

I have several pieces of stained furniture that have been damaged by different things sitting on them and ruining the finishes. I want to try to finish them to look like the original finish but have not been very successful. Any suggestions as to what to do will be appreciated.

Best to use regular stain. Then apply finish after. You cant really just touch up spots. Generally you strip the finish off the top, re-stain then apply finish.
