What is the convention for an interior designer to quote wardrobe area?

TA asked:

An interior designer quoted, in the cost estimate, the area of a wardrobe to be 63 sqft. The frontal dimensions of the finished wardrobe are 5′ x 9′. Based on experience with other interior designers, I was expecting the wardrobe to be 7′x9′ (=63sqft). I thought that’s the convention for costing a wardrobe by area.. measure the elevation width and height and multiply the two.

Is this correct?
