Interior reading lights work in combination with interior lights but why won’t they work by themselves?

There is an override button so none of the lights come on when doors are open but they also work with interior lights but when you press just the reading lights they don’t come on alone.

Normal operation of most systems is:
Override button in OFF position – no interior lights operate at all.

Override button in Normal position – Dome lights operate from door switches – Reading lights operate by switches on individual lights – depending on design they may or may not also light with the door switches. If the reading lights will not operate by the individual switches in this setting the likely problem is with the master switch.

Override switch on manual ON position – Dome lights on with doors closed, reading lights may or may not also light.
