You are using the term “design” in such broad manner that your explanation just begs for reinterpretability. “Clarity of communication” refers to structure, as in the structure of a sentence or computer program. Perhaps it was I who used the term “design” in a blanket fashion to dismiss it as a whole, but I was merely referring to graphic design in its most front-end occurrences, which is the type of design stossel was reporting. I stand behind my claim, and hope I have clarified it for you.
It doesn’t matter what branch of design you’re in…DESIGN means clarity of communication and communication will always be paramount in all cultures. So, I think to say graphic design is of little importance means you don’t know what graphic design is.
He is totally right in implying that graphic design is of SOOO little importance. It really is. It’s now time for computer users stop being fancy and start being functional. And yes, I have a BA in Interactive Digital Design.
Comic Sans is overused, even in the realm of comics. There are several other good comic fonts out there. Dave Gibbon’s handwriting is an excellent one.

Actually I used Comic Sans whenever I had to write something into speech balloons. It looks very natural inside speech balloons.

Ugh. It saddens me that people don’t realize the impact that advertising and marketing has on everyone. It might seem inconsequential to someone who doesn’t know the inner workings of graphic design, but there is so much more to it. The psychology behind the WHY of graphics is what controls everything from politicians to entertainment and beyond. Too bad that man didn’t take the time to do his research. You’d be surprised by what a well placed graphic can do.
