Interesting observation. His wife was in the studio and was verbally prompting him and gesturing every time I asked a question, which made us both a bit uneasy. I found him to be a very articulate and delightful guest with a great, dry sense of humor.

Thanks Key,
He was a tough nut indeed, but there was always a twinkle in his eye, and in his art.

I love what he said last, about the 8 stripes. It shows how much we, as graphic designers, try to read into things and sometimes they just don't need to be read. But very good interview! =)

Design, generally speaking, is such a fly by the seat of your pants profession, that it's amusing to hear an older one speak about iconography with such whimsy and lack of irony. Poetry can't be described and neither can design--both HAPPEN to a great extent as insightful creations, governed by fashion, cleverness and applied imagination. Not thru some magical process...just a willful desire. Rand has held a position, much like a dinosaur...one day relegated to extinction. Ah the good old days..

I'd like to art direct that Seventies throwback interviewers hair! And how about that shitty set? It looks like the nursery in a bowling alley. It's an insult to have Paul Rand appear before it!
