Bess asked:

I suppose that it depends on the person on how long it takes to become a graphic artist, and how hard you try.

And when I say graphic artist, I do not mean graphic designer. I mean someone who, from scratch, creates a portait of someone or something.

Anyways just the usual amount of time it takes to become good at gaphic art and/or become a professional.

Thanks!

If you’re self taught, it will take however long it takes. Not everyone went to school to make and sell their art. I know two who did their own learning, put together portfolios and ended up getting business through that–the lack of professional schooling didn’t hinder them. One is doing magazine covers and worked on the Magic: A Gathering cards (she did 6 cards) for Wizards Of The Coast. The other got a job updating the Eskimo Pie logo, modernizing it from the original art fromt he 1960’s. She didn’t keep going with art though, took classes to get into the mortuary field and works with the city of Racine as a mortician now. But she did do art on the side for the longest time and was designing a set of Rune cards, but didn’t finish those yet.
