Fish Stick Jesus asked:

I want to know if there is any need in the world for people who can draw or paint. I mean, with photography and Photoshop nowadays, is there really any need for graphic designers/artists?
I want to be a painter or at least draw, but I’m not sure if there is a need for them in society these days.
What do you think of people who can draw and paint? Is there any need for them anymore? Is it a talent worth having these days?

Most definitely. Computers and programs can only do so much. I wish I had the talent to draw and paint. You can’t tell a computer to paint a beautiful sunset or capture the moon reflecting off water…well, ok, you can, but that still takes the computer artist to do it and draw it on the computer.

There will always be a need for artists and their imaginations.

There is, and always will be, a need for real artists. First of all, most graphic artists are still fine artists by heart that happen to use a different medium for the sake of modern convenience. Most graphic artists that I know still do the majority of their work by hand and then digitize it for editing purposes. Yes, graphic programs such as PhotoShop and Illustrator makes creating decent artwork a lot easier, but you still need an artistic touch to create it.

As someone who works in the commercial field, I’ve seen a recent rise in demand of “genuine” artwork. These days people are gradually turning away from overly digitized work and leaning towards work that have a more hand-made quality or look towards them. The market is slowly leaning away from computer-created artworks and favoring more hands-on creations. The market these days are so overly saturated with mass-produced art that this is a natural reaction.

So if you want to pursue a career in art, then I saw do it. It will behoove you to learn other mediums in order to create your work, since that’s how society is leaning these days, but in the end an artistic eye will always be helpful when looking for work in the creative field, no matter what you medium of choice may be.

I have always envied those that can express Artistry though manual manipulation, beit Cartoons, Graphic Arts, or even Shadow Puppets. It is a skill I do not possess. The World needs you. Imagine a world without computers. Cave drawings have lasted for Millennia.

Keep drawing. I, for one, admire your skill

Of chourse there is! Photography and Photoshop are over rated. I mean, I do use it but I am also an artist. I draw the old fashioned way with pen & pencil. Computer illustration can only go so far, it takes much greater talent and hard work to draw by hand than on the computer. I know, I do it.

In Japan, they are loaded with talented artists who don’t use computers. The manga-ka (comic book creators) make their art by hand, tone sheets & colour with classic markers. And they make a great living. Not to mention what comes after: Anime- Japanese animation. It is traditionaly created by thousands of extremly talented artist who free hand paint onto cels. Now that takes talent!

Unfortunatly, here in America, the fine art by hand seemingly casting aside with the dawn of cgi >_< Interesting enough, they’ve been loosing money…because you can have all the best CGI in the world, but it amounts to nothing when it comes down to raw natural talent.

You can make a living as a Professional Artist in many ways such as: illustration, fine artist, comic book creator…there are so many different fields I’m sure you’ll find. ^_~ I’m a free style manga-ka & line art artist. I’ve been doing quite well selling my artwork & cels.

People like original artwork because it’s so unique & individual. It expresses more than what a mere CGI can do. It’s definetly a talent worth having! The worst thing anyone with natural talent can do is let it go to waste.
