i wouldn’t call graphic design corporate crap. give it more credit than that. It probably does more good for society than fine art does. graphic design has the power to bring about social awareness. art can be very selfish

I didn’t call Graphic Design crap – I wrote it’s “mostly sugar coating corporate crap”. “Corporate” being the reference to being “crap”, NOT Graphic Design.

And sure, Graphic Design can bring “social awareness”, but as for Graphic Design “doing more good for society”? Well that depends on what’s being peddled doesn’t it?

An Artist needs to know Art; A Graphic Designer needs to Art, DT Publishing, Marketing and a little psychology. Graphic Design presents more often a commercial ideal with Art. Ergo, the prior term “Commercial Art”. If a Graphic Designer can’t distinguish the difference then they’re just artists that don’t understand what they’re getting paid to do.

The question “Is Graphic Design Fine Art”? is really kind of ridiculous.

Graphic design is not a fine art. It as an applied art. Most of the opinions here are made by obviouse FINE ART students that will never make any money or LIFE with their work. See you all at Walmart stoogies.

Actually their is a pretty even mix of traditional fine art majors and graphic design majors. Many of these students have since graduated and landed great jobs.

It’s not rocket science. Graphic designers create work for other people while artist create work for themselves (or at least they try to).
